Jose Maria Velasco

José María Velasco was one of the best landscape painters Mexico has ever had, as he made Mexican geography the inspiration for his great oil paintings.
From a very young age he had an interest in painting, and by the age of 18 he was already a professor of perspective at the National School of Fine Arts, later becoming a professor of landscape at the same institution. Over time, he became an inspiration for great muralists such as Alfaro Siqueiros, Clemente Orozco, and Diego Rivera.
Velasco’s realism was achieved by studying geography, architecture, botany, and zoology alongside the production of his pictorial works, leaving a legacy of around 300 paintings, watercolors, and lithographs. His work is significant for the quality with which it was painted, thus his art influenced the following artists of the twentieth century and his work became a symbol of Mexican identity by reflecting the biodiversity and architecture of the country in the nineteenth century.
